Organizers of the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival announced today that they have partnered with the Junior Chamber International Kofu (JCIK) to cohost Japan’s first ever baconfest. The Japan Bacon Festival will take place from 10 AM to 4 PM on November 3, 2017 (Japan Culture Day) at Kitaguchi Historical Park and Yamanashi Prefecture Foundation Park in Kofu, Japan. The cross-cultural baconfest will offer attendees American-style and Japanese-style bacon, pork-inspired cuisine by 20 local restaurants, beverages, food demonstrations, a chef exchange, live music, bacon-filled contests, and international bacon fellowship. A portion of festival proceeds will be used to support local charities.
Brooks Reynolds, co-founder of the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival and Chairman of the Iowa Bacon Board, explained, “We were inspired by an historic humanitarian effort that took place in 1959. Japan had been devastated by two huge typhoons and Iowa’s response was to airlift 36 breeding hogs and ship 100,000 bushels of corn to help with the recovery effort. The initiative, referred to as the Iowa Hog Lift, is credited with setting the stage for Iowa and Yamanashi becoming Sister States by formal agreement, opening markets in Japan for US goods and services, and initiating agricultural cooperator programs between the United States and Japan.”
Reynolds continued, “With help from our friends at the US Embassy, Iowa Sister States, Des Moines Sister Cities, Berkwood Farms, CK International ltd, and our valued sponsors we look forward to adding a little more sizzle to this wonderful relationship that was sparked almost 60 years ago.”
The Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival is held in Des Moines, Iowa in the month of February. Organizers plan to announce the official date for the festival’s much anticipated 11th Year shortly after Labor Day.
